Social research assistants use multiple streams of data to find information. They use the internet, surveys, legal documents, and other published research to help the person they are assisting collect information.
We are looking for undergraduates looking to get credit and will perform experiments under their supervision. However, some research assistants might work for founder of the company and writers who needs someone to track down information.
JOB SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS
Communication: Research assistants need to be able to speak and write about their findings clearly, as well as understand assignments and instructions.
Attention to Detail: Finding the right information takes concentration.
Critical Thinking: Research assistants need to use decisive reasoning to determine the best course of action in their research.
Technical Skills: Research assistants will use computers to research their information, as well as record their findings.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE JOB
- Preparing tenders for research contracts
- Receiving instructions and project briefs from clients
- Outlining objectives
- Directing and undertaking pilot studies and fieldwork
- Collecting, analyzing and interpreting qualitative and/or quantitative data
- Writing reports
- Identifying and advising about possible strategies
QUALIFICATION AND TRAINING REQUIRED
There are routes into social research for both university graduates and school leavers.
A good degree in any subject is acceptable for entry although qualifications in social research, business studies, mathematics or statistics. A postgraduate qualification and/or specialist knowledge.
Relevant practical experience, particularly research experience, is advantageous.
